About the show:

Rocco is a piece inspired by Luchino Visconti’s movie Rocco e i suoi Fratelli. The original story is about brotherhood and the struggle for a better life. A story about the search for identity by those whose roots are severed out of necessity. The potential of physical and psychological extremes that Visconti explores in his film layer by layer, resound in this dance performance of ICKamsterdam. The intense surrender which is evident in the boxing scenes of the film, finds its parallel in the physical dedication of the dancers.
In Rocco dancers become boxers and boxers become dancers.

From the media:

''U scenama boksa u Viscontievom filmskom klasiku Rocco e i suoi fratelli (1960.), ljubav i razdor između dva brata zauzimaju glavno mjesto i služe kao inspiracija za radnju, što i u kazalištu funkcionira kao savršen knock-out. Prvi vrhunac ove plesne sezone je pred nama.''– Sander Hiskemuller (Trouw, studeni 2011.)

''Boks je ples, dvoboj je duet.'' – Joyce Roodnat (NRC Handelsblad, rujan 2011.)

About the authors:

Since 1995 Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten have worked together in their joint search for new dance forms.

Emio Greco (IT) received his dance education at the Centre de Danse International Rosella Hightower in Cannes, and danced with the Ballet Antibes Cote d’Azur, directed by Patrick Tridon. From 1993 until 1996 Greco danced in works by visual artist and director Jan Fabre and from 1996 until 1998 he collaborated with Japanese choreographer Saburo Teshigawara in various productions.

Pieter C. Scholten (NL) studied drama and initially directed theatre productions about historical characters like Oscar Wilde, Yukio Mishima and Pier Paolo Pasolini. He worked with several choreographers as a dance-dramaturge. In 1995 he developed the Dance Instants, short “work-in-progress” projects for choreographers and dancers. For both artists the search for a new dramaturgy of the body is an important motivating facto.

In 2012 they initiated the EU project SPAZIO whose goal is to support a new generation of European choreographers with partners in Poland, Italy and Croatia (Croatian Institute for Movement and Dance).

The performance is supported by the Royal Embassy of The Netherlands.
